If there was to be a silver lining to all of this pandemic nonsense, it would have to be the sheer volume of quality tunes coming out of this fair city.

As COVID pulled the gig rug out from under our local noisemakers, they got down to the business of what they do best – writing quality, world-class songs.

When it comes to quality original local music, Newcastle and surrounds have proved, yet again that it is one of the most eclectic and downright exciting โ€˜scenesโ€™ in the country.

In a nutshell, Newy musos can write the hell out of a tune.

To ram that point home again, we thought we would put together a bit of a playlist full of some of our fave tracks from Newcastle artists that have dropped in 2021.

From the frenetic punk rock urgency of Rort Menace’s Royal Permission, and the early noughties electro-inspired glory of RAAVE TAPES’ How Long Did Urs Take, to the lush alt-country soundscape of Piper Butcher’s Before The Thunder and Lennie Tranter and the Bagism Revelation’s Sing It Out Loud, it’s pretty much a give that our music scene is as healthy, or healthier than it’s ever been.

And this is by no means an exhaustive list of every local note recorded in 2021, just a crop of songs that are really floating our boat. We’re always keen to get turned in to new tunes so, if there’s a track you think should be added, let us know!

So, without further ado, check out our Best of 2021 Part 1 playlist. Also, as you’re listening, why not check out the artist’s socials and find out when and where they’re playing and what merch they’re slinging? Because the more support for our local industry, the better.

Also, next time you’re at the pub and some jaded bloke in a faded Acca Dacca t-shirt tries to tell you that the Newy music scene died in 1982, just pull out this playlist and voilร ! Argument won.

Happy listening, Newcastle!
