NEWFM’s Jade Leeder will be swinging her hips with abandon next week, all in the name of raising money and awareness for bushfire-affected koalas.
Jade, who is one-third of the station’s Novos breakfast crew will hula hoop for 105 minutes (that’s more than an hour and 45 minutes or those playing at home) to raise funds for Port Stephens Koala Hospital which has thrown open its doors to care for injured or burnt koalas.
The idea came after the Novos team visited the hospital last week and were ‘moved to tears’ but ‘determined’ to do something to ensure these little critters can continue to get the care they need.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money and the good news is that the generosity of Newcastle has seen the campaign exceed the initial target of $1000.
People are still able to donate, though and given that it costs around $150 a day to nurse one koala back to health, every little bit counts.
For example, a donation of $50 could purchase essential cooling and non-painful Flamazine ointment used to prevent infection in severe burns. $200 could purchase an IV drip stand used in administering vital fluids for rehydration, while
$2000 could purchase a triage cot used for housing ill or injured koalas during intensive care.
Jade’s hula hooping feat will be live-streamed on the NewFM Facebook page on Tuesday 11 December.
