If you’ve checked out any vego or vegan menu over the last little while, you’d know that there is so much more to this cuisine than lentils, mung beans, and TVP.
And there is definitely a lot of love for meat-free eateries in our part of the world as evidenced by the amount of love shown by you when we asked where to get the finest examples of vegan or vegeterian fare in Newcastle.
So without further ado, and in no particular order, here are your top five suggestions
98 Maitland Road, Islington
This Islington location has housed a restaurant since the 1970s. Formally Guiseppe’s it changed its name to Pino’s at the turn of the new millennium and is now fast gaining a reputation as THE place for vegans and vegos to go to fill their bellies.
This place serves up some of the most perfectly cooked pasta going around so, if you’re looking for a change from the normal meat-free fare, then Pino’s should be hight on your list.
40 Church Street, Minmi
If you’re keen for a bit of a trek, Bonta Vera (which translates to True Goodness) were also given a fair bit of love from you guys.
You can even get a “chicken” schnitzel at Bonta Vera too, but with a twist as any mention of animal products on their eclectic menu refers to a plant-based alternative.
Oh and apparently they do a pretty mean burger, too!
140 King Street, Newcastle
We love our ramen here at Newcastle Live and Susuru is always high on the list when we’re looking to satiate our craving for noodly goodness.
While there are a range of great meat dishes to sample at this funky eatery at the top end of town, they also offer a hefty selection of meat-free options.
Highlights include the Vegan Curry Ramen (vegan noodles in a vegetable, pepper and shiitake broth with Japanese curry roux, topped with fukujnzuke pickles, shallots, and crumbed tofu)-and the Mabo Tofu Donburi (tofu stir-fried in a sweet ginger-garlic chilli-bean paste and topped with sansho pepper and shallots on a bowl of rice)
59 Beaumont St, Hamilton
While a pub bistro that specialises in succulent T-Bones, juicy burgers and crispy chicken schnitzels, might be the last place to find some decent vegan fare, The Kent is certainly bucking that trend.
While we haven’t indulged in the meat-free menu, apparently a lot of you have and the reports are all glowing.
Cnr Hunter and Brown Streets, Newcastle
Momo, which occupies the former KFC site on the corner of Hunter and Brown streets (somewhat ironically) offers up an eclectic and tempting range of meat-free fare.
Highlights for this writer include tMomo’s Shroom Burger,, and their handmade steamed Tibetan dumplings filled with veggies, tofu and a heck of a lot of flavour!
