They are the iconic Sydney-bred sonic agitators who used their ska/pub rock sound to shine a light on such topics as homelessness and racism.
And, 28 years after dropping their last album Fossil Spy v Spy are back with a brand new slab set to drop in September this year.
The album is called New Reasons and the band will be giving fans a preview of what sonic gems lie within with the single Overland which will be unleashed on Saturday 3 July.
With the passing of founding guitarist Michael Weiley in 2018 after a battle with cancer, Cliff Grigg, the band’s original drummer and songwriter was charged with the task of bringing the Spys back to their glory days that saw the release of such cornerstone albums as Xenophobia (Why?), A.O Mod. TV. Vers, and Harry’s Reasons.
Before his passing, Michael had handpicked some local musicians and embraced them as the newย Spyโs to carry the music forward into the future.ย
And make no mistake, Spy V Spy are well and truly back and here to stay.
The new lineup boasts Cliff Grigg on drums, Dean Reynolds on vocals, Cameron Hallman on bass and Andrew Davis filling the formidable shoes of Michael Weiley.
โNo one could emulate Mikeโs sound he was so unique and melodic,” Andrew said. “Always had the perfect note in the perfect place – a true Australian guitar hero.โ
With many of the issues that the Spys rallied against all those yewars ago still frighteningly relevant, now seems like the perfect time to reignite the fire in their original fans and light a new one under a whole new generation.
In that spirit, the band will be hitting the Wickham Park Hotel next month to usher in a new era for the iconic agit-rockers in what promises to be one heck of a show!
Catch Spy v Spy at the Wickham Park Hotel on Saturday 3 July. Head here for tickets.
