Later this month over 250 cars worth $1,500 or less will leave Newcastle headed for Townsville as part of the Shitbox Rally raising funds for the Cancer Council.

It’s a trip that will see the teams of two, including our very own The Nut Truckers, driving 7 days on dusty, mostly unsealed roads with a goal to raise $2 million before arriving at their destination.

The whole thing will kick off at Honeysuckle Carpark on the corner of Hannell Street and Honeysuckle Drive on Saturday, 13 May.

Over the past 13 years, the rally has raised an impressive $37 million for Cancer Council through the efforts of teams from all over the country.

James Freeman OAM, the founder of Box Rallies (which includes Shitbox Rally and Mystery Box Rally), started these events after losing both of his parents to cancer within a year of each other.

“Shitbox Rally is not a race, but a reward for fundraising efforts. This is a chance to explore Australia, drawing teams from around the country to help achieve the extraordinary,” James said.

“The rally brings people together from all over the country. Many have been affected by cancer in one way or another, whether it be family, friends, or themselves personally.

“The rally not only wants to raise awareness and money for Cancer Council but also wants to offer support and a friendly ear to those that have suffered or are suffering.”

This year’s rally will have some exciting “firsts.”

Starting from Newcastle is a new addition, and Betoota will be an official stopover for the first time.

The Shitbox Rally will leave Newcastle on Saturday, 13 May. The whole community is invited to cheer on the teams as they leave the car park bound for Townsville. Visit the event page to find out more. You can donate to teams at shitboxrally.com.au.
