Newcastle’s long-standing reputation as a breeding ground for original music is alive and well, if the opening round of the Messiah Meltdown Battle of the Bands is anything to go by.

Held last Friday night at Thirsty Messiah Brewery in Lambton, the first heat of the competition saw Sydney-based rockers Red Violet edge out local favourites Imaginary Things for the win, with the latter picking up a wildcard spot.

The night also featured powerful performances from IRYSS and Ariette, who turned heads with standout original sets.

The man behind the mic and the mission is TRIPLE M radio personality Teza McKenna, who created the Messiah Meltdown alongside Thirsty Messiah’s owner, Thomas Delgatto. Their goal? To put a spotlight back on original live music in Newcastle.

“Sadly, this genre is heavily undervalued in this town and we wanted to revitalise it and give opportunities to local and upcoming musicians,” Teza said.

With over 30 bands vying for a shot at the grand prize—including thousands in cash and a $3000 promotional package from Newcastle Live—the competition is heating up fast.

If heat one’s packed crowd and electric energy are anything to go by, round two this Friday is set to be another big one.

Kicking things off will be PRiiMAL, Teza’s own band, before five more acts take the stage. The free event starts at 7pm sharp, and with a solid lineup on the bill, organisers are encouraging punters to arrive early or book a table to secure a good spot.

The night also promises good vibes with $5 beers, burger specials and what many claim to be the best pizza in town.
