We told you recently about Getty Museum’s homemade art challenge. Well, now Newcastle Art Gallery is getting in on the act.

Yep, that’s right. Newcastle Art Gallery is challenging families from across the region to recreate artworks from its extensive collection.

But it’s not just kids that can take part in this quirky challenge inspired by the likes of the Getty Museum initiative and the Dutch Instagram account Tussen Kunst en Quarantaine (Between Art and Quarantine), this is a challenge that the whole family can sink their creative teeth into.

All you have to do is:

  • Select an artwork from the gallery’s collection (head here for some arty inspo or here for the full collection)
  • Get creative with your props and aim to use everyday items from around the house.
  • Share your arty creations with the gallery via its Instagram or Facebook pages.

That’s all there is to it! So if you want your creative renditions of work from the likes of William Dobell, Brett Whiteley and Margaret Olley featured on the gallery’s socials, get those thinking caps on now!

The Gallery has also launched a Tiny Portrait activity that challenges you to create a tiny portrait inspired by 2018 Kilgour Prize winner Natasha Walsh.

The Gallery has also launched a Tiny Portrait activity that challenges you to create a tiny portrait inspired by 2018 Kilgour Prize winner Natasha Walsh.

You can recreate Natasha’s Kilgour-winning work Within the Studio (self-portrait)  by following a few simple instructions.

  • Find a piece of paper and cut it into a square. Tip: If you want your picture to be the same size as the artist, measure your paper to be a  10x10cm square.
  • Get creative by using a mirror or phone (selfie mode) to view your own reflection.
  • Draw your reflection (or what you see) and be sure to include the frame of your mirror/lens.
  • Don’t forget to share your images on the Gallery’s Instagram and Facebook.

Both challenges are open now
