Tourism is one of the backbones of the Newcastle Economy, however, the Visitor Economy starts with each and every one of us. Whether it is travelling a short distance for breakfast, or taking a visiting friend and relative out for lunch we all help to keep the hospitality industry ticking over.
In coming months we’ll explore some easy ways to do that through some new and old ideas, and we’re going to start with some great walks around Newy โ that, of course, have to include coffee, good food and the option of a beverage!

Walking or bike riding
Walking or bike riding โ such an easy, healthy and inexpensive way to get around this great city of ours.ย Newy has some great bush and suburban walks, however, nothing beats our iconic coastal walks.
Starting or finishing at Merewether is always a favourite. Whether it’s for some sustenance before heading out, or something to aim for at the end of a long walk, Merewether Surfhouse do great breakfasts on the beachfront.

Beer and pizza
Later in the day, there is no better spot in Newcastle for a beer and a pizza!
Merewether Surf Club is the place to be if you want to relax into a lazy coffee with the rusted on local Clubbies and watch our famed local surfers on their home break.
Dixon Park is next beach around, and the weekend a pop-up coffee stand at the surf club seems to be growing in popularity by the week.
Bar Beach is home to the historic Cooks Hill Surf Club, and also great coffee, vegan muffins, burgers and fish n chips at the kiosk.
But youโve only walked a little over 1k, so get ready for the more challenging โ and rewarding stuff as we make the climb towards The Hill.

The Anzac Memorial Walk
The Anzac Memorial Walk is the brainchild of Scratchleys restaurateur Neil Slater, and his old schoolmate, leading Newcastle architect Barney Collins.
The coastal views are unsurpassed, and if there is a whale or a dolphin anywhere in sight โ you will spot it from here.
This is a walk that locals should never tire of, and an attraction that we should bring every single visitor we have to view. The best value in Newcastle โ Free!
From there, weave your way past the Mansions of yesteryear on The Hill, and maybe a slight detour to enjoy the views from the nearby Obelisk. Then through the highly underutilised King Edward Park, which should inspire you for your next Summer picnic!

The Bogey Hole
The Bogey Hole is a must visit spot to marvel at what our convict forebears chiselled by hand from the rocky platform, all for the pleasure of the Governor of the day.
When the swell is up, be awed by the ferocity of mother nature as the waves crash into and over the Bogey Hole. On a serene day, a great spot for a swim.
One more kilometre to finish today’s walk, when we end up at Newcastle โ or City Beach, with an acai bowl or something else for brunch at the newly renovated surf club kiosk.
Nearby is the popular Moor where brunch seats are always at a premium due to its reputation, but the whole of Newcastleโs famed East End is now at your fingertips, with bars, cafes and restaurants aplenty.
Enjoy your walk and make sure to take your visiting friends and relatives with you to support our local tourism and hospitality.
