Young People’s Theatre Newcastle is set to take audiences on an extraordinary journey across space and time when A Wrinkle in Time opens in Hamilton these school holidays.
Based on Madeleine L’Engle’s award-winning novel, the production follows Meg Murry, her younger brother Charles Wallace and their friend Calvin as they embark on a cosmic adventure to find Meg’s missing father.
Guided by the mysterious Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Who and Mrs Which, the trio travels through distant worlds while confronting a growing darkness that threatens far more than their own family.
The story has captivated readers for generations since its publication in 1962, earning the prestigious Newbery Medal and becoming a beloved classic of children’s literature.
Its themes of courage, individuality, resilience and love continue to resonate with audiences of all ages, making it a natural fit for the stage.
Directed by long-time Young People’s Theatre creative Katy Booth, the production showcases the talents of Newcastle’s emerging young performers through an imaginative blend of movement, storytelling and theatrical illusion.
Rather than relying on elaborate sets, the production uses physical theatre and simple yet inventive design elements to create entire worlds, with string playing a central role in bringing the universe to life.
Audiences can expect encounters with strange planets, celestial beings and unforgettable characters as Meg discovers that true strength comes from embracing who she is.
The production aims to balance spectacle with heart, exploring the power of love and human connection in the face of fear and uncertainty.
