A Beatles-inspired Yellow Submarine entry has taken out the Newcastle Permanent People’s Choice Award at this year’s Float Your Boat event.

Designed by Megan Evans, the glowing yellow tribute to the Fab Four lit up Lake Macquarie’s famous flotilla, delighting crowds both onshore and online.

“We were just looking to design something really exciting that young people and older people could get on board with and have a really good time,” Megan said.

“It’s wonderful to win the People’s Choice award, we came second last year so to take it the first prize this year was really exciting for everyone involved.”

Megan’s entry was one of 18 boats to take to the water for this year’s event, which saw around 12,000 spectators hitting three live sites across the lake, and earned her a $1000 prize.

Longtime crowd favourite Steve Upton added another accolade to his impressive Float Your Boat track record, coming in second with his playful Fred and Dino design, inspired by The Flintstones. His vessel brought in $600 and also earned a Mayor’s Choice Award. Rounding out the top three was a duo of whimsical watercraft: Hector the Helicopter, tied to Gary Knott’s boat Cattiva, which secured third place and a $400 prize.

Other highlights of this year’s event included aerial circus acts, parades of jellyfish made from recycled materials and live music
