Newcastle Writers Festival returns this weekend with a packed program of conversations, panels, launches and family events across the city, delivering one of its biggest and boldest lineups yet.

From major names to emerging voices, the 2026 program promises two full days of ideas, storytelling and lively discussion.

The action kicks off on Saturday morning with a strong spread of sessions running simultaneously across City Hall, the Conservatorium, NuSpace and local galleries.

Early standouts include conversations on bold women in literature, political biography, the writing life, slippery truths in fiction, and a deep dive into identity through the lens of contemporary storytellers.

Poets, novelists, historians and journalists will take to the stage across the morning for sessions that explore everything from creativity to resilience.

Midday brings another wave of heavyweight programming. A keynote lecture on democracy leads the lineup, alongside conversations on sport writing, modern life, truth in memoir, the environment, friendships in fiction and the complexities of mental health.

Book launches also dot the schedule, offering readers a first look at new poetry, fiction and nonfiction as part of the festival’s strong support for emerging and local authors.

The afternoon program shifts into more provocative territory, unpacking censorship, romance writing across genres, digital-age democracy, masculinity, loss and legacy.

Simultaneously, the festival expands beyond City Hall and university venues, with sessions at Newcastle Library and Watt Space Gallery diving into drawing, creative lineage and the libraries that shape readers’ lives.

The evening lineup brings a mix of celebration and big names, from conversations with actors and writers to live music-meets-literature events, comedy-tinged sessions, and the beloved Newcastle Poetry Prize presentation.

Sunday offers another large and diverse program. Families can enjoy the dedicated Family Fun Day, while readers can drop into artist-led workshops, author talks, discussions on ghost cities, political biography, brilliant characters, and the power of storytelling.

Later sessions dive into wonder in YA writing, forgotten women in Australian literature, artistic freedom, TikTok’s influence on publishing, love in literature, and the history and impact of local writing. The afternoon includes major appearances from political figures, philosophers, and celebrated authors, along with poetry salons, podcast recordings and discussions on truth, art, community and queerness.

The 2026 Newcastle Writers Festival runs across Saturday and Sunday at venues throughout the city. Many sessions are free, while ticketed events are available now through the festival website. With some sessions already sold out, festival-goers are encouraged to check the program and secure seats early for must-see events via newcastlewritersfestival.
