Locals passing by the corner of Darby, Queen and Laman streets are now catching their first glimpse of the dramatically expanded Newcastle Art Gallery, as scaffolding begins to come down on one of the cityโ€™s most significant cultural projects in decades.

The newly revealed exterior blends sleek glass-fronted walls with a modern design that pays homage to the Galleryโ€™s iconic Brutalist architecture.

The major redevelopment, which will more than double the galleryโ€™s footprint, promises to transform Newcastleโ€™s cultural landscapeโ€”offering greater access to an expanded collection and a diverse range of exhibitions from local, national, and international artists.

Among the new works commissioned is Process, progress, repeat by Newcastle artist Maggie Hensel-Brown, which will be installed next month across the windows of the new Learning Studio on Darby Street.

With scaffolding making way for renewed public spacesโ€”including fresh footpaths, upgraded lighting, and new landscapingโ€”the city is one step closer to the Art Galleryโ€™s much-anticipated reopening in September.

Backed by funding from all levels of government and years of community fundraising, the project marks a bold new era for the arts in Newcastle. Find out more about the expanded Newcastle Art Gallery by heading to newcastle.nsw.gov.au.
