Children and residents in Islington will now find it easier and safer to walk, scoot, and cycle thanks to the completion of a new footpath outside Islington Public School.

Spanning more than 150 metres around the schoolโ€™s perimeter, this upgrade marks the first stage of the Islington Cycleway project, a broader initiative to improve pedestrian and cycling infrastructure in the area.

The upgraded footpath is set to become a shared path once line markings and signage are installed in the coming months. Additional improvements in the area include new pram ramps, an upgraded school driveway, and an extended footpath along the southern side of Chinchen Street, connecting Clyde Street to the Styx Creek bridge.

The Islington Cycleway project is being delivered by the City of Newcastle, funded through a $950,000 grant from the NSW Government. These enhancements aim to provide safer and more accessible routes for both students and the wider community.

Beyond the initial upgrades, the project will feature an on-road, separated two-way cycleway along Chinchen Street, landscaped kerb extensions for improved visibility at Linden Street, and new connections to existing shared paths at the Clyde Street traffic signals.

A raised priority crossing at Hubbard Street will also give pedestrians and cyclists priority over vehicles. Officials hope this will encourage more people to embrace active travel while helping reduce congestion on local roads.

With the project set for completion by May, Islington residents can look forward to further improvements that will enhance connectivity and accessibility throughout the area. To find out more about the new cycleway, head to ncc.nsw.gov.au.
