Humpback whales are officially back for their annual migration, and Novocastrians will once again have front row seats thanks to Nova Cruises as thousands of the giants cruise up Australia’s east coast.

From late May through to early November, the waters off Newcastle transform into a marine highway, with Humpbacks travelling more than 5,000km from the icy Antarctic Southern Ocean to the warm birthing grounds off Queensland.

It’s one of nature’s great spectacles, and one locals never seem to tire of. Operators say Newcastle offers some of the most accessible whale-watching opportunities in the country, with the seasonal migration delivering everything from towering breaches to tail slaps just offshore.

Tourism operators across the region are gearing up for what’s predicted to be a bumper season. Whale-watching cruises are ready to get visitors up close to the action, pairing spectacular views with insights into whale behaviour, conservation efforts, and the importance of protecting marine ecosystems.

It’s not just a win for wildlife lovers; Newcastle’s winter visitor economy gets a serious lift, with accommodation, hospitality, and small businesses all benefiting from the migration months.

Conservation groups are equally excited. The Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans (ORRCA), which has tracked whale numbers for more than two decades, is reporting another rise in population, projecting a 10–15% increase on last year’s east coast total of more than 40,000.

If those numbers hold, 2026 could mark the most populated migration the coastline has seen. It’s a remarkable turnaround for a species once nearly wiped out by commercial whaling.

But experts caution that while Humpbacks have rebounded, they’re not out of danger. Modern threats like pollution, climate change, vessel strikes, and entanglement remain pressing concerns.

Protection under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act continues to play a key role in keeping these incredible animals safe in Australian waters.

This weekend marks the start of the 2026 Whale Watching season with Nova Cruises, running from Saturday, 30 May, through to Sunday, 1 November. Cruises will follow the whales’ northbound journey during winter and their return trip in spring. For more info, head to novacruises.com.au.
