Acquist brings dance, water and outdoor spectacle together in Civic Park this weekend, with free performances transforming the fountain into a stunning floating stage.

Created by Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub, the site-specific production blends water, weather and movement as six professional dancers perform on a platform built into the fountain.

The shifting surfaces and reflections create moments where performers seem to walk on water, adding to the dreamlike quality of the work.

Inspired by Margel Hinder’s iconic Civic Park sculpture, Acquist celebrates Newcastle’s history and dramatic coastline through bold physicality and striking imagery.

The choreography is paired with an orchestral score that heightens the sense of immersion as the dancers navigate the constantly changing environment.

Each evening opens with Newcastle’s own Zackari Watt, the self-proclaimed King of Sing, delivering a crowd-pleasing set of favourites, before a First Nations performance from proud Gamilaroi Mari man Zachary O’Connell.

The program is rounded out by an Artist Talk on Saturday, 24 January at the Newcastle Art Gallery, offering audiences deeper insight into both the dance work and Hinder’s sculptural legacy.

Catapult Artistic Director Cadi McCarthy and cast members will share the creative process behind bringing movement, water and public art together in such an ambitious way.

Acquist runs from Thursday 22 to Saturday 24 January at 6.30pm in Civic Park, with all performances free and family-friendly. Audiences are encouraged to bring a picnic and settle in by the fountain for an evening of music, culture and contemporary dance.
