Yesterday we published a piece about the vinyl revival movement. It got the town a-talkin’ so as a little follow up, here are my favourite, and highly recommended vinyl hotspots about town.

The Edwards Shop – 148 Parry Street Newcastle

So whatever they say about Millennials and smashed avocado, Iโ€™d personally like to attribute my lack of a mortgage to my vinyl addiction and time spent at the Edwards Record Shop. Iโ€™ve spent many a minute talking to the legendary Chris Dunn about my fascination with Sleater-Kinney and Bikini Kill and not being judged for my secret angst and anger at 26. If there is anything youโ€™re after, vinyl wise, Chris will be able to source it for you. The added organisation and passion of his offsider, Spencer Scott, makes shopping here a real treat. Also you can purchase a pint of Melbourne Bitter next door. Hot tip for young players.

The Mosh Pit – 272 Main Rd Cardiff

Iโ€™ve been here, really incognito, many many times. The coffee is great, but the service is even better. Iโ€™ve been here to sit and write, peruse the stacks of records at my leisure, and really just be ok with spending time, spending time. They also hold some really cool events for like minded individuals, doing like minded things.

Cooks Hill Books – 72 Darby StreetNewcastle, New South Wales

They donโ€™t have a STACK of records here, but the ones they do have, are absolute gold. That and I picked up a copy of Neil Diamondโ€™s Hot August Night here which is the one true way to my heart. All second hand stuff, all with history, and pretty reasonably priced. Iโ€™ve easily spent hours here, tucked away, unaware of the state of the world. Books and music will do that to you.

Abicus – 103 Darby Street Newcastle, New South Wales

I have a real sense of nostalgic attachment to Abicus on Darby Street. When my best mate in High School first got her license, we used to spend many an hour, drinking coffee that tasted nothing like coffee, and trying to find ways to spend our money. Abicus to me, was always a wonderful place where I thought the older, cooler version of myself belonged. Now Iโ€™m older, and probably not much cooler, but whenever Iโ€™m anywhere near Darby street, I always go in for a wander.

Black Pug Records – 80 Maitland Road Islington

Now, this is a little controversial, because I havenโ€™t actually been here, but friends of mine have sung its praises for many months now. From everything Iโ€™ve seen and heard, these guys are ridiculously passionate about what they do. They also run a record label too, which is no easy feat. Iโ€™m all about accountability and perhaps this post will turn my โ€œIโ€™m meaning to get thereโ€ to โ€œIโ€™m going in next weekโ€.

Disclaimer – Yes, you can buy vinyl from JB hi fi, sure. But if you can, throw some coin behind your independents. They, and your town, will thank and love you for it.
