There’s no denying that, when it comes to hubbub about pub grub, there are few dishes as beloved as the humble chicken parmigiana.
And Newcastle/Charlestown eatery Rascal has cottoned onto that fact, releasing a unique burger take on the alehouse classic that is sure to have omnivores everywhere salivating.
Yep, that’s right. Rascal has gone meat-free for its latest Burger Of The Week special with its vegan chicken parmigiana burger – The Varmi.
This plant-based concoction sounds as good as it looks – a golden brown vegan chicken schnitzel, Napoletana sauce, vegan cheese, rocket, pickles, onions, garlic aioli, all nestling harmoniously betwixt a fresh potato bun.
News of the meat-free burg was met with a chorus of approval with some suggesting that it should be added permanently to Rascal’s vegan/vego menu which includes the Cauliflower Cheeseburger and Southern Fried Mushroom Burger.

Others however were more apprehensive at the idea of biting into a burger sans meat with one Rascal fan channelling Homer Simpson by offering a pithy “you don’t win friends with salad,” about the burger on social media.
That opinion was in the minority, though with voracious meat eaters singing this burger’s praises.
Rascal is located at 266 King St, Newcastle and The Corner Precinct, Charlestown Square
