If Usher Tinkler was in a club it would be a gathering of unique winemakers who respect tradition but want to try something new. The members of this club also love music. And enjoy good food. Sign us up!
It was this unique wine offering, and the promise of lashings of cured meats on cheese plates, that had us book into Usher Tinkler Wines for one of their three Cellar and Salumi sessions (11am, 1pm, and 3pm) last Sunday.
And it did not bloody disappoint…
Despite the chilly Winter weather in the Hunter Valley the converted Pokolbin church which Usher Tinkler Wines calls home was warm and inviting. There were relaxed Aussie tunes spinning on the record player and visitors thoroughly, and safely, enjoying being out of iso and exploring the famous wine region.
Wine tasting at Usher Tinkler Wines costs $5 per person which is redeemable on any per person wine purchase and you can build your own cheese and salumi tasting based on how hungry you are.
We went with two cheeses and one meat (try the Capocollo, flavoured with red wine and oregano – a melt in your mouth delight). The platter was also piled with an amazing array of accompaniments – fresh local berries, bread, crackers and pickled peach to name just a few.
Totally scrumptious and generous.
But back to the wine.
Stand out tastings for us were two styles that we’d never tried before. The first a blend of two Hunter Valley faves – the Nose to Tail Semillon and Chardonnay – super refreshing, imagine a lovely afternoon wine to share with friends in the sunshine. The other was The Enneagram. An almost mind-bending blend of 9 different grape varieties. If the bottle artwork doesn’t get you, the colour and flavour certainly will.
All in all a beautiful day out amongst the vines and just one hour’s drive from Newy.
