In the tinder age, I feel like that art of dating can get a little lost. The first date should be exciting and nerve-racking, but most importantly, it’s a chance to get to know that person better. If you are the planner of said date, a little effort actually goes a long way. So, step away from the Netflix and chill, swipe right, and treat your significant other to one of my top 5 first date spots in Newcastle. (From someone who has been on many a first date).

1. The Blind Monk – 76 Beaumont Street, Hamilton

They do call it the safe drink for a reason. This is a super cozy boutique bar on Beaumont Street, serving up some awesome craft beer. What I love about this as a date venue is the overall feel of the place. It’s super warm and inviting with a great fairy-light covered outdoor area (#aesthetic). The lighting is good and the vibe is right. Go here for a great drink selection and good conversation.

2. Jazz Night at the Underground (The Grand Hotel – 1 Church Street, Newcastle)

There is an event held every Tuesday evening, run by an organisation known as NIMA, in the basement of the Grand Hotel AKA the Underground. Every week some incredibly talented musos flock here to give a super intimate performance for a very lucky, very niche crowd. It’s a room set with couches and mis-matched furniture making for a really cosy atmosphere. There are plenty of breaks for chit chat which also means more chances to impress the lucky individual with #culture and knowledge and appreciation of live music.

3. Mini Golf at Newcastle Super Putt – Turton Road Broadmeadow

A bit of healthy competition is sometimes just what you need on a first date. It’s light hearted fun and sometimes you need a mutual activity to get those initial conversations going. They are open until 10 on Fridays and Saturdays and they are also a BYO venue, in case you need some Dutch courage to shake those initial nerves.

4. Habesha and Tower Cinemas on King Street

Nothing says impressive like taking the time to think outside the square. It’s called culture people! This Ethiopian restaurant is amazing and the food is incredible. Combine this with a cool indie film being shown at Tower cinemas and you’re on a winner. If you want to romance level up as they say, see the movie, get the meal to go and venture up to a hillside with a view.

5. Open Mic Night at the Hamilton Station

Ok ok hear me out… If you’re an aspiring musician and feel like you’re much more impressive when standing behind a guitar because you’re a creative (/tortured artist) type and because perhaps your small talk lacks substance, then this is for you. I would definitely be coloured impressed at the thought. (For those playing at home I know my one true vice is a girl who plays guitar). The lovely gentlemen who run this little event, which is fortnightly on a Monday eve, I’m sure would be more than happy to assist you with any special requests you may have in terms of acoustics. Hot tip for young players though, maybe test out your playing ability on a third party prior to picking this option!

So there you have it, my “Top 5” first date options in Newcastle. I’m sure they will also translate well to any couple happy, in love, and looking for something to change up their date night instagram feed #blessed #datenight #bae

ABOUT LAURA

I’m Laura, and writing about our wonderful city is something I am oh so passionate about. You can find me tucked away in the corner of your local open mic night, taking in the sights with a local artist flowing through my headphones, or hanging out in the front row of your first gig where you’re debating whether the staff count as crowd members. Built on coffee, live music and punk nostalgia, I write about talented people doing talented things.
