Sometime back in the late ‘80s or early ‘90s, I caught the Divinyls live. Twice. Lead singer Christina Amphlett prowled the stage, fierce and seductive at the same time. That was 30 odd years ago. Guitarist Mark McEntee was like this strange, trippin’ dude who was so wacky that he compelled us to come along for the ride. And drums and bass – strings thrummed and skins hit so hard that you didn’t just hear it, you felt it.

Not since then have I seen a female-fronted band with such power and charm. Until I saw Turpentine Babycino.

Relatively new to the scene, they have arrived with the same impact they have live. Driven by passion. Their debut single ‘Write A Song Sounds Shit’ is rock with a pop sensibility that gets in your head and stays there. The middle-eight is a divine piece of vocal heaven before leading into the chorus to end. That sense of nuance, along with the sheer potency of their live show, is part of what makes Turpentine Babycino special. The talent on stage is the other part.

Singer Georgie Winchester is a creative powerhouse. Like Ms. Amphlett, Georgie prowls the stage, a mix of the sheer joy of unleashed energy, the power of the music behind her and the conviction of her missions, making a statement and having a bloody good time. She wants you along for the ride and you don’t have a choice.

The bedrock foundation that drives Winchester is the force that is drummer Gabriel Argiris, guitarist extraordinaire Cormac Grant and bass driven by Manuel Rohrl who combine as one powerhouse unit, tight and electric. This band is next level, not your corner shop variety of local band but an outfit with the presence and performance to blow your mind.

Their 2nd single ‘Calamity’ was released recently and the band undertook a 13 date tour to celebrate. They’ll hit the Hunter as part of the tour – don’t miss this show – details below.
