Ah yes, the new painted bicycle signing on Hunter Street (as it leads into Scott Street) is a sight to be seen.
It’s quite wonderful really, we all know that Newcastle is a city for the arts and now we have yet another public artwork to gaze upon. But how to interpret it? Here are our top five ways to decipher the code.
1. Hieroglyphs
The ancient Egyptians had it right. Symbols, which translate into other symbols that translate into stories. This is a wonderful, and ancient method, and perhaps one which we should have studied more closely at school. But what do these particular signs mean?
2. Alberti’s disk
Because of the concentric circles of course. They may look like bike tyres but they could be anything for all we know. I’m sure that passers-by will be able to whip out their Alberti’s disk-like device and read on, before heading on. Right?
3. Crop circle code
Because perhaps the images really are messages from the beyond, I mean, you have no idea right? *X Files music plays in the background*. What would we all do if aliens came to Newcastle, or better yet, how would the aliens get from one end of Scott Street to the other?
4. The Phaistos disk
Circles, wheels, rolling, weird lines and images, a sunken city. You see where I’m going here right?
5. Something to do with where and when bikes are allowed on the street?
This one is, of course, the most far-fetched of them all. The signage is of course ridiculously confusing so surely it doesn’t mean where and when the bikes can be allowed on the street and in which direction they could and should go. But Lord knows right?
