The Star Hotel, one of Newcastle’s most iconic venues, is turning 100 this month, and you’re invited to be part of a special centenary celebration weekend.

From its colourful past to its ongoing legacy as a hub of local culture, the 100 Years of the Star Hotel event will honour the venue’s impact on music, activism and LGBTQIA+ history with a packed three-day program of free events.

The festivities kick off on Friday, 29 August, with night at Bernie’s Bar with a historic marker unveiling ceremony and live music from local favourites TNR – The New Rockin Band.

The opening night also features the launch of a photo and memorabilia display, curated from private collections, and a QR-enabled digital history trail that will be accessible throughout the weekend.

Saturday, 30 August, is set to shine with a drag extravaganza paying tribute to the venue’s strong LGBTQIA+ ties. Headlining the event is Jaymie Swan, one of the original Star performers, joined by local drag stars Chanel Detroit, She Needa and Orlando Gloom. DJs will be spinning classic queer anthems from 9 pm to keep the celebration going.

On the Sunday evening, the Star will turn its focus to storytelling and reflection with a screening of the acclaimed Star Riot documentary.

Director Glenn Dormand will be on hand for a Q&A session, offering fresh insights into the infamous 1979 police riot and its enduring impact. The evening also includes a history talk with the Newcastle Rainbow History Group, sharing new research into the Star’s role in the city’s LGBTQIA+ movement.

The Star Hotel’s 100-year celebrations are happening across the weekend of 29 to 31 August. Visit the Facebook event for more information.
