The Song Cover Challenge is a Newcastle based facebook competition that challenges people to learn new songs, record them and make videos. Every two weeks a themed round is put up, and six people enter to put their own spin on some famous songs. The series has already enjoyed 12 excellent rounds that you can explore here.

Round 12โ€™s theme is Food Songs, and was chosen by Championship Round winner David Cook. Round 13 is a more abstract round than previous rounds featured on NewcastleLive; the only thread connecting these songs together is the use of food in the title.

Below we have all five entries for Round 12 of the Song Cover Challenge. You can vote for your favourite here.

Alexander Wilhelm – Pour Some Sugar On Me

“Def Leppard are straight edge and sober health junkies. So I’d really like to know what they were on to write this song. But is was easy enough once I found a nice drum sound. Then I threw their solos out the window and wrote my own. It’s like elevator hair metal, I guess?”

Brian Walton – Strawberry Fields Forever

“After this I need beer and I will be happy if I never see a strawberry again.”

Alex Martin – Tangerine

“I was feeling very intimidated by the idea of covering a Led Zeppelin song, as they’re one of my favourite bands ever. [I tried to] strip the song back to something similar to my own material, which you can check out on my Bandcamp page and is significantly better than my effort here.”

The Billy Zanes – Peaches

“We got together and recorded a very straight forward cover but it felt a bit off and was lacking any kind of natural feel. So we started over and made it really silly. My voice completely died and I could not get the lyrics to come out of my mouth. But we had fun.”
“I put the peach in the coat. AND I PUT THE COAT ON HER!”

Sam Cupitt – Cherry Pie

“This song is filth but I found solace in the fact that the guy who wrote/sung it also didn’t like it. Cheers to Adam for making it a thing and Jacinta for filming me grumpy at the computer.”
