Newcastle is about to be shaken by a seismic collision of dance, rock, and radical First Nations storytelling as genre-defying six-piece Selve bring their Breaking Into Heaven album tour to The Lass O’Gowrie Hotel.
The historic tour follows the release of their new single Strange Romance and the announcement of their upcoming second album, the first full-length LP ever recorded at Abbey Road by an Aboriginal artist.
Led by Jabirr Jabirr frontman Loki Liddle, Selve are known for fusing post-punk, psych-rock, and new-wave with theatrical flair. With Breaking Into Heaven, they’ve taken things to a new level.
The album was written across three continents and recorded in the hallowed halls of Abbey Road’s Studio 3, the very same space that birthed Dark Side of the Moon. At its core is a fierce reclamation: a First Nations voice breaking into a “constructed heaven” to rewrite the rules of rock ‘n’ roll mythos.
New single Strange Romance is a dancefloor anthem drenched in deep synths and buzzy guitars, inspired by zombie flicks, Depeche Mode, LCD Soundsystem, and Berlin nightlife.
A stunning music video filmed on Bundjalung Country continues the band’s expanding Selve Cinematic Universe, a poetic, non-linear narrative laced with cosmic chaos and cultural reclamation.
With previous praise from Rolling Stone, triple j, NITV, and ABC rage, Selve are fast becoming one of the country’s most urgent and unforgettable live acts.
Catch Selve live in Newcastle at The Lass O’Gowrie Hotel with free entry on Thursday, 2 October. Their album Breaking Into Heaven drops Friday, 12 September, available to pre-save and pre-order now.
