The cast of Hunter Drama’s production of Oliver! will hit the stage at the Civic Theatre this week with over 130 “Orphans” and one very eager dog.

Rusty, who comes from Bankabull Kennels, will play the role of Bullseye, Bill Sikes’ scrappy canine companion in the production’s six scheduled performances.

Rusty and Newcastle theatre favourite, Marty Worrall, who plays Bill Sikes in the production, have been bonding during recent rehearsals and are all set for the performances ahead.

Hunter Drama General Manager, Hayley Stoddart, said when they put out the call for a bull terrier last month on the Hunter Drama Facebook page, they were inundated with responses.

“We had more interactions from that post than anything weโ€™ve put up in the last 12 months,” laughed Hayley.

“People were tagging and sharing it in record numbers and, within hours, our In Box was flooded with profiles of budding four-legged thespians!

“We carefully assessed all applicants for age, temperament and appearance and were delighted when we โ€˜auditionedโ€™ Rusty. He is perfect, right down to the white colouring and black eye patches.

“Rusty has been in the rehearsal rooms with all the colour and movement from our 52 core cast and is proving to be an absolute pro. We canโ€™t wait to see him take the spotlight in this brilliant production,” added Hayley.

Hunter Drama’s production of Oliver! rolls into the Civic Theatre Newcastle for six performances from Thursday 10 March till Sunday 13 March. Tickets are on sale now.
