Newcastle’s comedy star Rhys Nicholson is heading home to host a second Newcastle Comedy Festival Gala after record demand saw the festival’s original gala event sell out months in advance.
The additional gala has been added to the 2026 program following the rapid sell-out of the festival’s July 18 showcase, which featured some of Australia’s biggest comedy names.
Organisers say the overwhelming response highlighted Newcastle’s growing appetite for live comedy, prompting the creation of a second major gala featuring an entirely different lineup of performers.
Nicholson’s return marks a rare opportunity for local audiences to see one of Australia’s most celebrated comedians performing in their hometown.
Joining Nicholson on the July 25 bill is a powerhouse lineup of Australian comedy talent. The gala will feature Andrew Hamilton, Lizzy Hoo, Stephanie Broadbridge, Mel Buttle, Dan Rath, John Cruckshank, Bec Charlwood, He Huang, Takashi Wakasugi, Paige Hally and Sez.
Together, the comedians represent a diverse mix of established favourites, rising stars and cult performers, spanning stand-up, musical comedy and character-driven comedy.
The second gala is part of what is shaping up to be the biggest Newcastle Comedy Festival yet.
Running across five weeks and featuring more than 30 performances, the festival will transform venues across the city into comedy hubs, with shows taking place at locations including the Civic Theatre, Newcastle Conservatorium, Newcastle Comedy Club, The Oak and more.
Building on strong momentum from previous years, organisers expect another record-breaking festival in 2026.
The Newcastle Comedy Festival Gala 2 will take place on Saturday, 25 July 2026. Tickets are on sale now, with prices ranging from $55 to $99. For tickets, the full festival program and event information, visit newycomedy.com.
