The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Communications and the Arts is set to convene a public hearing this Friday for its inquiry into the challenges and opportunities within the Australian live music industry.,
As part of the ongoing inquiry, the Committee will gather insights from leading music organisations, aiming to tackle topics such as industry funding, accessibility, consumer attitudes, and strategies for growing audiences.
“The Committee is eager to explore issues surrounding the accessibility of live music and current consumer behaviour,” Brian Mitchell MP, said.
Among the groups providing testimony is Music Victoria, a not-for-profit and the primary advocate for contemporary music in Victoria. Representatives from Music Victoria will discuss findings from their recent Perceptions of Live Music report, which examines current trends and challenges within the live music sector.
The Committee will also hear from Music Australia, an organisation under Creative Australia, which has recently collaborated on initiatives like the More Than A One Night Stand Sessions, complementing triple j’s One Night Stand festival. The session is expected to address the role of national initiatives in boosting the visibility and resilience of live music.
Support Act, a charity focused on crisis relief for the music workforce, is scheduled to provide input on the support needs of musicians, managers, and crew. Additionally, Arts Access Victoria, which advocates for accessibility in the arts for people with disabilities, will speak to the barriers faced by diverse audiences in engaging with live music events.
The public hearing will be held on Friday, 8 November 2024 at Parliament House in Canberra. The hearing will be broadcast live on YouTube.
