Newcastle Pride founder Lee-Anne McDougall has been recognised as Newcastle’s Local Woman of the Year for 2025.

The annual award celebrates individuals who have made a significant impact in their communities, highlighting progressive thinkers, social advocates, and role models.

Since co-founding Newcastle Pride in 2018, Lee-Anne has played a pivotal role in fostering safe and inclusive spaces for the LGBTQIA+ community across Newcastle and the Hunter region.

As the President of Newcastle Pride Inc, she has led a passionate team of volunteers in delivering some of the city’s most successful festivals and community events and created the month-long celebration of diversity and inclusivity Newcastle Pride Festival.

Her recognition comes as part of NSW Women’s Week, an annual event celebrating the achievements of women across the state. Each recipient will receive their certificate at the 2025 NSW Women of the Year Awards ceremony.

Newcastle Pride has become a powerful platform for intersectional communities, advocating for positive change and greater representation. Through her work, Newcastle has become a more inclusive, diverse, and welcoming city for all residents and visitors alike.

Lee-Anne will also be added to the 2024 Hidden Treasures Honour Roll, a tribute recognising the contributions of women who volunteer their time and energy to support others in regional and rural NSW.
