What started out as a bit of fun for the people of Kurri and surrounds has turned into a hair-raising international sensation. And this year, Mulletfest is hitting the road, scouring the nation to find the best examples of “business in the front, party in the back.”
In fact, the popular festival is expanding into a season in 2021, with the Mulletfest Crew hosting heats in pubs across the country from February to December.
Local mullet heads needn’t worry though, the 2021 event will kick off at its traditional home of the Chelmsford Hotel in Kurri and run across three fun-rilled days from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 February.
However, this year the Kurri event will only be open to NSW residents and international entries will be open upon the the completion of all heats.
Mulletfest director Laura Johnson told Newcastle Live the decision to take the show on the road was born out of a desire to give something back to pubs across the country who have done it tough in the face of drought, bushfire and COVID-19.
“Looking at Mulletfest this year, the more I was thinking about if we can do Mulletfest in 2021, the more I thought I really want to be able to share the love. I wonder if we can help more than just us, I wonder if we can help everyone,” she said.
“The thing is, mullets really are everywhere. Last year we had nine people fly in from overseas to compete and we had people fly in from every single state and territory in Australia.
“We just want to get out there and share some of that joy with Australia.”
That joy will be present, in spades, at the Chelmsford Hotel at the end of this month with hair-farmers of all ages vying for hirsute bragging rights across a range of categories including Ranga, Extreme and Vintage.
However, as Laura explained Mulletfest is just as much about having a bloody good time as it is about finding the best mullets in the country.
“The vibe is next level,” she said.
“You have never been somewhere where there are so many people smiling. If you’re someone who likes to people watch, you’re going to love Mulletfest.
“There’ll be live music (COVID pending) there’s great food, cold beer lots of laughs and then we’re taking that out to show Australia just how the Hunter Valley parties.”
