A series of free in-person and online workshops, aimed at improve accessibility to health, education and family services for kids will kick off in Lake Macquarie next month.
Running from Thursday 6 May to Thursday 27 May, the 2021 You’re Kidding Me program features eight events covering such essential topics as stretching your family’s food dollar, sustainable meal planning, and infant and toddler sleep strategies.
Lake Macquarie Council’s Community Planner Children and Families Erin Peterson said the program was an opportunity to showcase practical information to help support local families and create a stronger community post-COVID.
“The program includes a variety of informative workshops, from cooking, music, children’s emotions and sleeping strategies, to energy and water saving tips,” Ms Peterson said.
“We’ve designed our workshops to be educational as well as fun – parents can come along and learn new skills, ask questions, get advice and involve their kids too.”
Lake Mac eco-living business French for Tuesday will host a From Pantry to Plate introductory talk at Charlestown Library on Friday 7 May focusing on sustainable meal planning and feeling confident in the kitchen.
“The program brings families together to learn about the type and variety of services in the local area which they may not know about,” founder Mardi Lee said.
“This can then help with taking small, actionable steps to create a stronger and healthier family and local community”.
Other You’re Kidding Me workshops include a Thursday 6 May session at Toronto Library led by occupational therapist Bonnie Berry from Peaceful, Play, Present, who will help parents understand how children’s bodies and brains deal with big emotions and why.
Local sleep and settle guru Natalie Ebrill will host two talks on infant and toddler sleep strategies to help parents getting little ones to self-settle and sleep longer. They will run from 11.30am-1pm and 1.30-3pm on Monday 17 May at Charlestown Library.
There will be a yoga session on Wednesday 26 May, led by children’s yoga teacher Clio Badenhorst, and a musical session on Thursday 20 May by Julie Logan Music, a You’re Kidding Me regular.
Meanwhile, an energy and water-saving workshop, a children’s dance session, and a talk on the importance of tummy time are also on offer digitally throughout May via Zoom.
You’re Kidding Me runs from Thursday 6 May to Thursday 27 May. Bookings for all events are essential. Head here for more information.
