Newcastle’s cricketing cooks Matt Gawthrop and Luke Stewart have ben crowned the best home cooks in Australia and champions of My Kitchen Rules 2019.
The workmanlike duo took home the $250,000 grand prize in a hotly-contested grand final that saw the boys go up against Sydney team Ibby Moubadder and Romel Kouyan in a mammoth five-course cook off.
With both teams serving almost flawless courses, Ibby and Romel scored an impressive 88 out of 100 from judges Pete Evans, Manu Feildel, Guy Grossi, Colin Fassnidge, Karen Martini, Shannon Martinez, Guy Turland, Sean Connolly, Liz Egan and Rachel Khoo.
However, it was Matt and Luke who won favour with the judges’ taste-buds, scoring an impressive 92 out of 100.
Matt and Luke’s restaurant “Powerplay” served a “modern Australian” menu consisting of confit salmon with peas, duck ravioli with wild mushroom, barramundi with roasted fennel, beef cheek with parsnip mash and peach Bellini for dessert.
While they may’ve flown under the radar for much of the competition, Matt and Luke’s performance in the latter stages saw them emerge as favourites, with Sportsbet tipping the locals as favourites at $1.80, behind Ibby and Romel at $3.00.
