Say what you want but Newcastle, but its residents definitely know how to come together when the chips are down.
Case in point, the legends over at Newy Burger Co. who, after giving back to the community in 2020 with free Kindness Boxes are rolling up their sleeves to do it all again for lockdown 2.0.
From this Wednesday, aside from their regular array of next-level burger fare, the Hunter Street eatery will be making sure Novocastrians have access to the staples like milk and bread and maybe a few extras, in an effort to relieve some stress associate with the current restrictions.
Newy Burger Co. owner Ben Neil told Newcastle Live that the restaurant would be providing the kindness boxes for as long as there was a need.
“For as long as we are able and while we are in lockdown, definitely,” he said.
“This lockdown seems to have hit a little bit harder and a lot closer to home, so there’s a lot of unease and stress that comes with that and we just want to do our little bit for the community.”
Over the past few weeks, Newy Burger Co has also been offering free portions of house-made pumpkin soup (using produce from Rarity Wholesale) and hand sanitiser (donated by Earp Distilling Co) and Ben said seeing that initiative’s popularity had inspired another round of Kindness Boxes.
“We’ve been doing the soups for the last couple of weeks, which have been well received, and as people came we you started to hear how there’s a bit more of a need and on top of that there’s a lot of businesses and individuals that want to give in a way that supports in this time,” Ben said.
This time around, the Kindness boxes will contain the Newy Burger Co/Rarity Wholesale soup, Earp Distilling Co hand sanitiser, eggs from Just Been Laid, some small goods items from Gourmet Food Distributors, and Woolworths has even come on board with donations of bread and milk.
Woolworths vouchers, purchased using donations from the community will also be included in the Kindness Packs.
Ben added that they are always on the lookout for other local businesses to support the worthwhile initiative.
“Anyone who wants to jump on board we’re certainly not going to say: ‘no,’” he said.
“It’s all about doing something for the community. And more importantly, there are no questions, you don’t have to explain your situation, just pop in and grab a kindness box for yourself, your family or even a neighbour.”:
