Bar on the Hill is kicking off the 2026 University of Newcastle calendar with Live on the Hill, a reimagined Welcome Week celebration set to electrify the campus in January.

Formerly known as the O’Ball, the event marks a return to the venue’s live music roots with a festival-style lineup and multi-stage setup.

Surf-rock favourites Hockey Dad will headline the night, bringing their signature riffs and sing-along anthems to Newcastle for a high-energy start to the academic year. They’ll be joined by rising indie-pop talent Jem Cassar-Daley, alongside local indie outfit Loons, The Sweet Heaps, and the breathtaking Nina Romeru.

The party will span the venue across two stages, featuring 12 hometown DJs and a late-night silent disco. Attendees can expect a dynamic, multi-zone festival vibe that combines national acts, emerging stars, and local heroes, creating a unique Welcome Week experience.

Live on the Hill aims to provide a fresh take on the traditional university party, blending live performances with immersive entertainment zones. From high-energy performances to the late-night silent discos, there’s something for every music lover to enjoy.

With an eclectic mix of genres and artists, the event promises to set the tone for a lively and unforgettable academic year. Attendees will be treated to both crowd-pleasing anthems and new tracks from some of Australia’s most exciting acts, alongside homegrown Newcastle talent.

Live on the Hill takes place at Bar on the Hill, Newcastle, on Friday 30 January 2026. Tickets go on sale Thursday 11 December for University of Newcastle students and the general public. Full details and tickets are available via oztix.com.au.
