The 2026 Australian Heritage Festival is set to bring the Hunter’s rich history to life, with a series of events and tours highlighting the city’s fascinating past.

Marking the 46th year of the nation’s largest community-driven heritage celebration, the Festival runs across New South Wales with more than 150 free and ticketed events, offering something for everyone, from families to history buffs and culture enthusiasts.

In Newcastle and the Hunter region, festival-goers can step back in time with a mix of live performances, tours, exhibitions, and workshops.

Highlights include the Burton Automotive Hunter Valley Steamfest, a weekend celebration of steam power, heritage, and family fun with live music, market stalls, gourmet food, and heritage walks.

History enthusiasts can also enjoy A Street of Pubs of the Past, a Newcastle heritage tour led by historian Ed Tonks. The walk explores Hunter Street, once home to 55 hotels, uncovering stories of the city’s vibrant social past.

Meanwhile, those looking for a night of nostalgia can attend the Roaring Twenties-themed dance at Club Lemon Tree, featuring live jazz, swing dancing, and a rare 1913 silent film.

Organised by the National Trust (NSW) with support from the NSW Government through Heritage NSW, the Festival not only connects communities but also supports museums, galleries, conservation groups, libraries, and local businesses.

It celebrates the diverse stories and cultural heritage that shape Newcastle and the wider Hunter region.

The 2026 Australian Heritage Festival will run from Saturday 18 April to Monday 18 May 2026. For bookings, full program details, and information on other NSW locations, visit australianheritagefestival.org.au.
