Newcastle is set to welcome its first purpose-built inclusive playspace and water play area, with construction on the Foreshore Park project expected to begin this year.
The ambitious initiative, which aims to provide a regional-level playground accessible to people of all ages and abilities, is set to become a flagship destination for inclusive recreation in the city.
Developed over more than five years with input from the community and the Touched by Olivia Foundation, the playspace aligns with the NSW Government’s Everyone Can Play guidelines.
As the centrepiece of the Harbour Foreshore Masterplan, the playspace will be situated at the western end of Foreshore Park. It will feature four distinct zones catering to different play experiences, including junior and toddler areas, nature-based play, waterplay, and quiet spaces.
Adding to its uniquely Newcastle character, bespoke playground equipment will be installed, including a central whale-themed swing and picnic area that pays homage to the Worimi and Awabakal peoples and their rich history.
Other standout features include an elevated nuts and bolts play structure reflecting Newcastleโs industrial history, a sensory pathway, a carousel, an accessible slide, and wheelchair charging stations.
The playspace will be supported by a fully accessible amenities building and kiosk, currently under construction, featuring unisex ambulant toilets, a parentโs change room, and a Changing Places facility.
With backing from the NSW Government, Variety the Children’s Charity, the Touched by Olivia Foundation, and the Newcastle Port Community Contribution Fund, the project is set to transform Foreshore Park into a premier recreational hub. Find out more by heading to newcastle.nsw.gov.au.
