Where is the Green Sheep? is coming to Newcastle as part of a huge national tour, bringing Monkey Baa Theatre Company’s new stage adaptation of the beloved book by Mem Fox and Judy Horacek to the Civic Theatre.

The production arrives after sell-out seasons at Brisbane’s Out of the Box Festival and the Sydney Opera House, with the national tour set to reach around 150,000 young people and families.

Blending puppetry, animation and gentle storytelling, this 45-minute show is designed for children aged one to six and the grown-ups who read the book with them.

Audiences meet a colourful cast of familiar friends: Blue Sheep tending to flowers, Red Sheep cartwheeling across the fields, Bath Sheep splashing in bubbles and Bed Sheep bouncing with delight.

But the question remains the same: where is that elusive green sheep? The playful search unfolds across an immersive, visually rich farmyard world.

Young audiences join three farmers on the quest, with the production shaped in part by students from Bankstown West Public School, whose voices are woven through the narration.

This connection to children’s own language and imagination gives the show a sense of authenticity and warmth that mirrors the spirit of the original book.

As more families look for moments that feel present and off-screen, the production offers a shared experience that unfolds live, right in front of small, wide-eyed audiences.

Characters appear, voices echo, and surprises land in real time, a reminder of how powerful it can be for children to see a story they know come to life.

Where is the Green Sheep? stops at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre as part of its multi-year, 80-venue national journey. Performance dates and ticket details are available via monkeybaa.com.au.
