One of musical theatre’s most beloved classics is returning to the Newcastle stage, with Young People’s Theatre and Lindsay Street Players presenting The Sound of Music in Hamilton from this month.

The timeless musical follows the inspiring true story of Maria, whose love of music changes the lives of the Von Trapp family in Austria as World War II approaches.

Featuring unforgettable songs including Do-Re-Mi, My Favourite Things, Edelweiss, Sixteen Going on Seventeen and the iconic title number, the production promises to delight audiences of all ages with its enduring message of hope, courage and family.

Presented in collaboration with Lindsay Street Players, the adult theatre ensemble operating under the Young People’s Theatre banner, the production continues the company’s recent run of acclaimed performances following its 2024 relaunch.

Directed by Joshua Maxwell, who previously helmed the musical on the Central Coast, the show brings together a large multi-generational cast that has spent months rehearsing to bring the much-loved story to life.

Originally premiering on Broadway in 1959 and based on the real-life story of the Von Trapp family, The Sound of Music remains one of the world’s most successful musicals. Its themes of resilience, kindness and finding your voice continue to resonate with audiences, while its memorable score has made it a favourite for generations.

For Newcastle audiences, the production offers the chance to either introduce younger family members to a theatre classic or revisit a cherished favourite.

With its blend of humour, heartfelt storytelling and iconic songs, Young People’s Theatre is aiming to deliver a nostalgic and uplifting theatrical experience while continuing to showcase the strength of local community theatre.

The Sound of Music runs at Young People’s Theatre, Hamilton, from 17 July to 15 August 2026. Tickets are $28 and are available via the YPT website or by calling the box office.
