If there’s one thing that helps us get through it’s listening to new music from local artists.
Today, 22-year-old singer/songwriter BERLYN releases her sophomore single, Crowded. This release follows her 2019 debut Can We Go Home Now which received airplay on community radio and the Triple J Unearthed live stream. We gave it a spin and caught up for them for a chat about the recording and what it feels like to release it to the world.
Crowded showcases BERLYN’s magnetic vocal delivery which drips in space between the atmospheric and dynamic instrumentation. Lyrically the song is both poetic and evocative.
“I wrote this song during a time when I was having more trouble dealing with anxious thoughts in my head than usual. It came from that place as a kind of release.” BERLYN says.
“It’s so personal and honest, but I guess Iโm hoping thatโs what people will connect with”
Musically, the single draws on inspiration from Middle Kids Jack River and Maggie Rogers with a chugging chord progression and big drums. The chorus is soaring without becoming anthemic and really captures the magic of the recording.
“I recorded the song at Tommirock studios with Mitta Norath. He produced, engineered, mixed and played drums for it so heโs a massive part of the track. Itโs awesome working with someone that really listens to where you want to go with a song, and then invests so much genuine energy and time to help you get it there. The whole crew at Tommirock are the best.” BERLYN told Newcastle Live.
Originally from Tamworth, BERLYN started performing at a young age and spent a childhood writing songs. Moving to Newcastle after finishing school, BERLYN says there’ll be more music coming in the future.
“Iโd love to record an EP somewhere in the near future. This is probably not a bad time to start!”
