Novocastrians are being urged to Give a Sheet for the Planet this weekend, with a free textile-recycling drop-off set to land in the heart of the city.
The environmentally minded event is all about clearing out cupboards while cutting down waste across Newcastle.
This weekend, locals can swing by the Newcastle TAFE Tighes Hill campus carpark to ditch their old towels, sheets, and household fabrics as part of Newcastle’s second Give a Sheet for the Planet recycling day. It’s a simple way to offload those forgotten linens piled high in the linen press, without sending a single scrap to landfill.
The initiative is powered through a partnership with clean-tech innovators BlockTexx, who break down donated fabrics into their cotton and polyester fibres.
Those fibres are then transformed into hydromulch, new textiles and even materials used in building and construction. In short, your frayed bath towel could end up helping regrow a patch of land or supporting a new structure.
City of Newcastle says events like this are a key part of its circular-economy vision. With Newcastle continuing to grow, so too does the challenge of dealing with unwanted items, and the city is pushing for smarter, more sustainable ways to return, reuse, repair and recycle everyday materials.
The last Give a Sheet event in 2024 saw almost 400 people drop off four and a half tonnes of textiles, preventing a hefty amount of CO₂ emissions in the process.
This time around, residents are encouraged to bring clean linen made from 100% cotton and/or polyester, which covers everything from face washers and bath towels to doona covers, tea towels and tablecloths. If it lives in your linen cupboard and fits the fibre criteria, chances are it’s welcome.
Give a Sheet for the Planet takes place on Saturday, 30 May from 9am at the Newcastle TAFE Tighes Hill carpark. For the full list of accepted items and event details, head to the City of Newcastle website.
