Photos from another fantastic weekend of live music across Newcastle…

We kicked our weekend off early on Thursday night with some sweet tunes from the gorgeous and very talented Kylie Jane at Warners At The Bay, they now have live music every Thursday night from 7.00 pm. This week, popular Newcastle artist, Dave Carter, will be playing. Come in early and have a bite to eat at the bistro, great food at a reasonable price, my recommendation is the Ribs, they are Sensational.

Friday night saw us at the Cambridge and The Wicko, first off the Cambridge for a night of acoustic music in the side bar, four great sets from talented singer-songwriters, Jessica Cain, Dan Southward, Dane Fitzsimmons and Spencer Scott. Jessica Cain stole the show; this tiny lady has an amazing and powerful voice you just donโ€™t expect to hear from someone with such a small stature.

Then it was off for the short trip up the road to the Wicko to catch one of the Lachy Doyle Groupโ€™s sets, Lachy just ripped it up with that beautiful old, 1957 Hammond C3 organ and his custom-modified Hohner Whammy Clavinet, what a talen,t always a good show.

Saturday night it was off to The Small Ballroom for Little Bastard. I’ve been looking forward to catching this mighty 7-piece punk-string band from Sydney for a while now and wasnโ€™t left disappointed. Great sound and lots of energy on stage, fantastic to watch. There were two support sets, with singer-songwriter Andy Golledge kicking things off. Andy was one of the discoveries of the weekend for me. He is engaging on stage and a real talent with some class original tunes. Andy most definitely has a new fan in me.  The second support act, Wavevom, was at the very least an interesting choice for the night. Iโ€™ll leave it at that.

Then off for another late night visit to the Wicko for Frank, which consists of  Dai Pritchard, Steve McLennan, Kenny Jewell and Craig Foster, with those four talented souls on stage it was everything youโ€™d expect, loud (so very loud), hard, fast and very good.

Sunday arvo kicked off at the Premier with one of my favourites The Dai Pritchard Band, Dai is one of the hottest guitarists around and with a shit hot band to back him up. Then to The Mark for every ones favourite Love That Hat, always good fun and a full dance floor.

Sunday night saw me at Lizotteโ€™s for Wagons what a show that was, Henry Wagons is a true showman and had the audience in the palm of his hand, at one point jumping off stage mid song for a stroll and chat with some of the audience, a bit of table surfing, then a trip to the bar for a round of beer for the band before returning to the stage, just foot stomping good fun. Nashville singer-songwriter Jonny Fritz opened the night with a killer set, another new discovery for me, I love his work, he is a real talent.

It will all be happening again next weekend, so check out Newcastle Livesโ€™  gig guide for a show near you.
