Starlight Day is lighting up Newcastle this Tuesday as the Starlight Children’s Foundation launches a major national fundraising campaign to help seriously ill kids smile again.
The charity hopes to raise $1.3 million by the end of June to keep its essential hospital programs running across the country, including right here in Newcastle.
Every minute, a child is admitted to hospital in Australia, often receiving a life-altering diagnosis. Starlight’s mission is to make hospital a happier place for these children, offering moments of joy through fun and laughter when they need it most.
Their programs bring light into otherwise dark days, replacing fear and stress with games, creativity and connection.
Funds raised will support over 33,000 children through programs like the Starlight Express Rooms, Captain Starlight visits to hospital wards, and the online platform Planet Starlight, which brings the magic of Starlight directly to any child with internet access.
These services help kids escape the harsh reality of hospital life and reconnect with the joy of being a child.
Starlight is anticipating almost 400 visits to their Express Rooms every day this year, with Captain Starlight expected to brighten the days of over 550 children on hospital wards daily.
By the end of 2025, they’ll have delivered around 170,000 digital experiences through Planet Starlight. These services not only entertain but also boost mental wellbeing, build resilience, and improve overall health outcomes.
Starlight Day is happening this Tuesday, 20 May, 2025 with all online donations made between 13–21 May matched by their major donor Mineral Resources. For more information or to donate, visit www.starlight.org.au.
