Cyclists in Newcastle have a new reason to celebrate as the city welcomes its first public bike repair station.

With the City of Newcastle committing over $3.6 million to enhance cycling infrastructure over the next year, it’s likely to get a bit of work out too.

“More and more Novocastrians are riding and have told us they want more cycle-friendly facilities and connections across the city,” Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen said.โ€ฏ

“By prioritising our investment in Newcastleโ€™s cycleway infrastructure, we hope to enable cycling to play an even larger role within the city’s active transport mix.”

Nestled within Islington Park, the newly established multi-functional repair station is a boon for cyclists.

It’s a pit stop that gives cyclists access an array of essential tools such as screwdrivers, wrenches, and tyre levers, the station also provides a repair stand to simplify maintenance tasks. There’s also a bike pump and gauge available.

Plans for installing bike parking racks are also on the horizon.

โ€œRecently we’ve completed new signals at the intersection of Chinchen Street and Clyde Street in Islington, at an important node between two key cycle routes, providing a safer connection joining Mayfield to the city, as well as improving connections to the TAFE and nearby schools.โ€ฏ

“We will also soon be talking with the community about a range of new cycleway projects, including a significant new connection joining Broadmeadow into Hamilton East and onwards towards the Newcastle Interchange, and an improved connection through Jesmond.”โ€ฏ

The city will also improve several challenging intersections on cycle routes around the city as part of the cycling infrastructure initiative. Visit newcastle.nsw.gov.au to find out more.
