5 BANDS TO ENTERTAIN YOU
The museum have put together a killer line up of live music. Featuring the cream of the Newcastle music crop, there’s something on this line-up for everyone. Check out who’s playing and when below.
5:00PM – BALTIC BAR MITZVAH
A combination of the most eclectic and raucous musicians in the village, Baltic Bar Mitzvah presents a ruthless fusion of musical genres to reinvigorate the soul.ย Steeped in the traditions of Western cultures, twisted by the globalisation of the contemporary world, then bottled with a label of class. Reunite yourself with the circus of your youth.
6:15PM – BERIAS MASSEQUE AND THE AFRO FUSION BAND
This exciting musicianโs style is quite unique. Whilst borrowing a great deal from his ingrained culture, Berias has remained open to influence from other styles of music and the result is what he describes as Afro-fusion. With influences from Jazz, Latin and Contemporary genres there is a plethora of satisfaction to be had from listening to this rich, vibrant musician.
7.15PM – ย THE CASSETTES
Anย 80’s Party Band featuring some of Newcastle’s favourite musos, Brien McVernon (Raiding Party, Circis Life), Craig “Rosie” Rosevear (Screaming Jets, DV8, Monsters of Rock) & Don Juan (USA). These veteran musos know how to party like its 1985, and you’ll know every word to every song!
8.15PM – HEY LADY
Hey Lady! are two piece band, who mash their polar opposite influences into killer tunes.ย Beautiful yet edgy female vocal hooks, innovative guitar work, and massive drums, are gracefully woven together to conjure the signature siren songs of Hey Lady!ย Since forming in late 2011, the dynamic duo have captured hearts and minds throughout their local scene, receiving radio play on Triple J, as well as gracing stages locally and interstate with the likes of Jebediah, Kingswood, Calling All Cars, Adalita, The Superjesus, Davey Lane, Money for Rope, Jackson Firebird, just to name a few.
9.15PM – ย THE OWLS
With rave reviews from Triple J’s Dom Alessio & Dave Ruby Howe the local lads from The Owls have made quite a name for themselves.ย After releasing their sophomore EP Swamp Love in 2012, the band quickly began building a league of fans across the country and interest from key industry tastemakers, including a 4-star review from Richard Kingsmill for their single Better Off Deaf and a huge list of reputable support slots including The Cribs, The Jezabels, DZ Deathrays, and Ball Park Music. After an extensive run of shows supporting the EP, the band decided to hunker down and hone their songwriting for the follow up release.
5 HOURS TO PARTY
This is your chance to pretend you’re Ben Stiller and explore the museum at night! For 5 hours from 5pm on the 5th of August the Newcastle Museum will host the hottest party in town! From the entrance of the building where theย live musicย will take place, to theย Sensory Wonderland featuring works from BLISS Cavanagh. It’s gonna be one hell of a party, and when it’s all over you’re in the perfect spot to kick on well into the night!
5 THINGS NOT TO MISS
With so much to see and do during the 5 hour celebration, here’s 5 things we think you shouldn’t miss.
1 – Hey Lady
One of the most exciting two pieces you’ll ever see, and they’re from our home town! The songs are hooky, and have an accessible punk attitude. We love em.
2 –ย Bliss Cavanagh’s installation
Truly one of the region’s most inspired artists. Bliss has turned herย Tourette’s into a theropy we can all enjoy. It’s bright, surreal and utterly entertaining for all ages… Don’t miss it.
3 – Supernova
It was always the highlight of the school trip to the museum. Well this is the perfect opportunity to relive those memories (with drink in hand!). Supernova was first launched in 1982 and continues to challenge, inspire and even flummox visitors! There’s a fewย new installations in place for the birthday celebrations too…
4 – Murray’s Brewery
Their beers are award winning for good reason. What better way to get the party started than a tasty drop from Murray’s? While they’re constantly brewing new tastes we can’t go past their Whale Ale. It’s highly drinkable and will even have non beer drinkers saying, “yum.
5 – The Organ
Basically, we love this organ! And if you haven’t seen it, you must check it out. There’s nothing more impressive than a big instrument.ย There is debate about the instrumentโs origins but it is known that from 1892 to 1919 the organ was in the drawing room of John St Vincent Welch’s home on Sydney’s lower north shore.ย In 1924, the organ was bought by the Merewether parish and installed in their church, where it has been in use until recently. St Augustine Anglican Church was built by E. C. Merewether and completed in 1889.
