A massive present and a 12-meter Christmas tree will mark the start of the festive season in Newcastle.
The present, which will remain on display until Boxing Day, is designed to be an eye-catching centrepiece for locals to pose and snap Christmas photos with family and friends.
Built from original cedar boards salvaged from a 140-year-old house in Carrington, the gift is an eco-friendly construction that repurposes Newcastleโs historic materials into a festive display. It’s wrapped in an artwork by popular local artist Mitch Revs.
The Christmas cheer will spread further across the city with more festivities at Wheeler Place, where a 12.5-meter Christmas tree will be erected next week. Lord Mayor Ross Kerridge and Santa Claus will turn the lights on in a special ceremony on 29 November.
After the ceremony, and every Friday and Sunday until 15 December, there will be Santa Selfie sessions with live entertainment from local schools, community groups and local musicians.
The Newcastle Youth Orchestra will perform on 13 December, headlining with instrumental ensembles and emerging vocalists who will lead traditional Christmas carols.
