Newcastle’s Civic Theatre is pulling back the curtain this September, offering visitors a rare chance to step backstage and explore one of the city’s most iconic performance venues.

The popular Behind The Curtain backstage tours will return for two special sessions, allowing theatre lovers, history buffs and curious locals to see a side of the Civic Theatre that audiences rarely experience.

Led by members of the theatre’s leadership team, the guided tours will take visitors beyond the auditorium and into the inner workings of the historic venue.

From backstage corridors and hidden spaces to the mechanics that help bring productions to life, the experience promises a fascinating glimpse into what happens behind the scenes.

The tour also delves into the rich history of the Civic Theatre, which has been a cornerstone of Newcastle’s cultural landscape for generations.

Along the way, guests will hear stories from the theatre’s past and gain a deeper appreciation for the people and processes that keep performances running smoothly.

While thousands of audience members pass through the theatre’s doors each year, few get the chance to walk the same backstage paths as performers, crew members and visiting productions.

The tours offer a unique perspective on the venue, revealing areas that are usually off-limits to the public.

The Behind The Curtain backstage tours will take place at the Civic Theatre Newcastle on Monday, 28 September 2026, with sessions at 10.30am and 12.30pm. Each tour runs for approximately one hour and is open to all ages, with just 25 places available per session. Tickets are on sale now through civictheatrenewcastle.com.au.
