A celebration of queer storytelling is coming to Newcastle this August, with Tower Cinemas set to host the Newcastle Queer Film Festival.
The festival will feature a diverse program of LGBTQIA+ cinema, including the Newcastle premiere of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, which arrives fresh from winning the prestigious Queer Palm at the Cannes Film Festival.
The program also includes Stop! That! Train!, starring RuPaul and Sarah Michelle Gellar, alongside a selection of films celebrating queer voices and experiences from around the world.
Opening Night will see audiences welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine before the Newcastle premiere of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma.
The film stars Hacks actor Hannah Einbinder and The X-Files icon Gillian Anderson in a camp, blood-soaked psychosexual thriller from acclaimed queer filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun, whose previous feature I Saw the TV Glow earned widespread critical acclaim.
The film follows a young director tasked with reviving the fading Camp Miasma slasher franchise, only to become entangled with the series’ mysterious former star in a surreal world where desire, fear and obsession collide.
Blending horror, satire and queer cinema, the film has already generated significant buzz on the international festival circuit following its Cannes success.
With a mix of premieres, award-winning features and crowd-pleasing cult favourites, the Newcastle Queer Film Festival aims to showcase the breadth of contemporary queer filmmaking while creating a welcoming space for local audiences to experience stories that entertain, challenge and celebrate diversity on the big screen.
The Newcastle Queer Film Festival runs at Tower Cinemas, Newcastle, from 5 to 10 August. Tickets for individual screenings and the full festival program are available now through Tower Cinemas.
