Newcastle Fringe Festival 2026 has wrapped after three huge weekends, smashing attendance records and crowning The Pretty Amazing Show as Best Show.
The numbers tell the story. A total of 18,134 people turned out for this year’s Fringe, a major leap from 2025 and the biggest audience in the festival’s history.
Fringe FEAST alone drew 6,000 people into Hamilton, while more than 12,000 flocked to ticketed events across the city. For a festival that brands itself Australia’s Biggest Little Fringe, 2026 proved just how big that mission has become.
This year’s program expanded across every metric, with 254 shows delivered by 112 acts and more than 800 artists performing in 15 venues citywide.
The volunteer team also surged to 110 people, reflecting the growing community pride and momentum behind the event. Importantly, the festival delivered tangible benefits for performers, who collectively earned more than $243,000, up significantly from 2025’s already strong result.
The annual Fringe Awards closed out the program, celebrating standout achievements across the diverse 250-show lineup. Local crowd-pleaser The Pretty Amazing Show took out the festival’s top honour, while international production The Routine was recognised for Artistic Merit.
Awards also highlighted excellence across theatre, comedy, cabaret, children’s entertainment, music, and dance, culminating in the Legend Award presentation to Phil Aughey for his foundational contribution to the Fringe.
Beyond the stage, the festival expanded its footprint with the first activation in Port Stephens and lively pop-up performances in Darby Street. Initiatives like Newcastle Next and Newymation continued to spotlight emerging talent, offering platforms and prizes for the region’s newest voices and creators.
With strong attendance, widespread support and a thriving open-access arts culture, the 2026 festival reinforced its role as a major cultural force for Newcastle and the Hunter.
Planning is already underway for an even bigger 2027 festival, set to run from 6 to 21 March. For updates and future program announcements, keep an eye on the Newcastle Fringe Festival website and social channels.
