Newcastle alternative punk outfit Dead Mall have unleashed their heaviest material yet with the release of RATS, marking a bold new chapter for the local band ahead of a hometown single launch at King Street Hotel next week.

The track is the band’s first new music since the release of their acclaimed debut album SUPERLIMINAL in 2025 and signals a significant shift in both songwriting and production.

Recorded, mixed and produced by guitarist Darcy Long before being mastered by Grammy Award-winning engineer Alan Douches, RATS strips away polished production in favour of raw aggression, drawing inspiration from influential metalcore acts including Poison the Well and Every Time I Die.

Lyrically, Dead Mall continue their fascination with unconventional subject matter. This time, the song takes cues from the satirical publications of the Church of the SubGenius, blending surreal religious imagery with dark suburban absurdity.

The result is a track that balances bleak themes with a playful sense of humour, reflecting a world that feels chaotic while never taking itself too seriously.

The accompanying music video, directed by Nathan Rathsam, expands on the song’s unsettling atmosphere.

Inspired by the surreal worlds of Donnie Darko, David Lynch’s Rabbits and the gritty aesthetic of hardcore outfit Chat Pile, the clip follows frontman Ruairi Burns as he stalks a mysterious rat-like figure before the story takes an unexpected turn, creating visuals that perfectly complement the song’s intensity.

Dead Mall’s profile has continued to grow since the release of SUPERLIMINAL, earning praise from major music publications and airplay across triple j, Double J and community radio stations nationwide.

The Newcastle five-piece has also sold out headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne while sharing stages with bands including Trophy Eyes, Anberlin, Dregg and Honest Crooks, cementing its reputation as one of Australia’s most exciting emerging heavy acts.

Dead Mall will celebrate the release of RATS with a co-headline show at King Street Hotel on Thursday 7 August alongside Sydney band Homesick, with support from local acts Grip Down and Written On The Body.
