Newcastle Art Gallery has locked in its landmark reopening, with a major street party and three-day celebration set to mark the city’s biggest-ever investment in cultural infrastructure.
City of Newcastle will kick off the celebrations by transforming Laman Street into a temporary sculpture park and an after-hours street party.
The one-night-only event will spill art out onto the street, launching a weekend-long program that culminates in the full reopening of the expanded gallery and the debut of its major exhibition, Iconic, Loved, Unexpected.
The reopening represents the completion of the largest capital works project in City of Newcastle’s history, the result of more than 16 years of fundraising and persistence.
The expanded gallery features 13 galleries and an additional 1,600 square metres of exhibition space, making it the largest public art institution in New South Wales outside Sydney and a new centrepiece for cultural tourism in the city.
Architecturally, the redevelopment builds sympathetically on the gallery’s original brutalist design while more than doubling its footprint at the corner of Laman and Darby streets.
New facilities include an international-standard loading dock, café, retail shop, multi-purpose program space and a dedicated learning studio, allowing the gallery to host exhibitions and experiences previously beyond its reach.
For the first time, the expanded gallery will be able to present long-term displays of its world-class permanent collection alongside ambitious Australian and international exhibitions.
Iconic, Loved, Unexpected will span two levels and showcase more than 500 works from the early nineteenth century to today, featuring local favourites, leading First Nations artists and internationally renowned figures, including never-before and rarely seen works.
The opening weekend will continue with artist talks, community artmaking and live performances across multiple art forms.
Reopening celebrations begin with Friday Night Sounds on 27 February, a free street party featuring sculptures by local artists, live music, DJs, roving performances, family-friendly activities, food trucks, a pop-up bar and lighting installations, alongside preview events inside the gallery. The full program details are available via the Newcastle Art Gallery website.
