New Wave by MusicNSW is heading to Newcastle this month, bringing a fresh boost of opportunity for emerging regional artists.

The statewide program is rolling out more than 40 workshops, talks and hands-on sessions across winter, and Newcastle’s own instalment is set to dive deep into the world of DIY recording.

Designed to empower artists who are still finding their footing, New Wave offers practical insights from people who live and breathe the industry.

From recording and releasing music, to touring, performing, marketing and building community, the series focuses on giving regional creatives the tools they need to cut through the noise, literally and figuratively.

Running through June, July and August, New Wave gathers artists, engineers, producers and industry professionals from across NSW.

The first round of events, happening 24–27 June, is all about demystifying the DIY recording process. Whether you’re tracking your first EP or finessing your home-studio setup, this opening chapter is designed to meet musicians exactly where they are.

Newcastle’s event, New Wave: Pressure Makes Diamonds, lands on 27 June and brings together engineers Joe Andersons and Lochlan Morgan with local artist Ella Day for a live studio recording session.

The trio will walk participants through the nuts and bolts of capturing a polished sound, from setup to workflow to bringing out the best in a performance. For early-career artists hungry to learn, it’s a rare chance to watch the magic happen in real time.

What makes the program stand out is its commitment to accessibility. All sessions, across NSW, online or in person, are free to attend via application or registration.

It’s an open invitation for artists to build confidence, connect with peers and learn from some of the state’s most respected creatives. Whether you’re writing your first song or preparing to release your next, there’s something in the mix for every kind of musician.

New Wave: Pressure Makes Diamonds takes place in Newcastle on 27 June. All New Wave events are free, but registration is required. To apply or explore the full statewide program, visit the MusicNSW website.
